When most people hear of massage, they are thinking of the long, fluid strokes with which the masseuse is going over your muscles. Many people don’t even know that what they are thinking and experiencing is called a Swedish massage, which is one of the most common type of massage techniques. Swedish massage is meant to reduce the soreness and stiffness in your muscles and joints, to reduce the anxiety, improve circulation and generally speaking to make you feel better, more energized and relaxed after a massage session.
Swedish massage is mostly composed of five basic strokes: effleurage, during which the masseuse / masseuse is sliding or gliding his / her hands across your skin; petrissage, when more pressure is applied wherever necessary to achieve the kneading of muscles; tapotement, which is a rhythmic tapping of knuckles or fingers against your skin; a frictional move, through which the masseur is moving his hands across fibers; and finally a vibration or shaking of the body. Therapists usually adjust the pressure of their hands over your muscles according to your sensitivity and previous massage sessions. Also, they typically use oil or some other lotion to facilitate the gliding of their hands over your body.
Recently I felt too tense and very grumpy, so I looked up my masseuse in Kensington for a session.
